The Hidden Costs of Flyer Printing: What Your Print Shop Won’t Tell You

Hero Image for The Hidden Costs of Flyer Printing: What Your Print Shop Won't Tell You

My extensive experience with print materials has taught me that budget flyer printing usually brings unexpected charges and hidden fees if you don’t shop around. These extra costs pile up quickly and turn an affordable marketing option into a much bigger expense. Understanding these hidden costs ahead of time helps make smarter printing decisions without surprises.

Basic Flyer Printing Costs Explained

Your choice of paper makes a big difference in flyer printing costs. A simple 135 gsm flyer gives you good durability at an affordable price. It’s 1.5 times thicker than standard printing paper. If you’re heading to business events and trade shows, 170 gsm paper will give you better durability and a more professional look.

Standard paper options and pricing

Paper weights can affect your costs by a lot. To name just one example, see how 5,000 A5-size flyers on 135 gsm paper cost £48, while the same quantity on 250 gsm paper costs £92. Paper finish also changes the price – 5,000 A5-size writable uncoated flyers at 250 gsm will set you back £234, while matt finish versions cost £72.

Print shops typically offer these standard paper finishes:

  • Gloss: Perfect for vibrant colors and sharp images
  • Silk: Gives you a balanced, professional look
  • Matt: Creates a sophisticated, non-reflective surface
  • Uncoated: Great for writing on

Size variations and their costs

Your flyer’s size has a direct effect on the final price. Bigger sizes naturally cost more. Here are the standard dimensions:

  • A7: 74mm x 105mm
  • A6: 105mm x 148mm
  • A5: 148mm x 210mm
  • DL: 99mm x 210mm
  • A4: 210mm x 297mm

The price difference can be substantial – 5,000 A5-size flyers cost £48, while A4 size costs £91. DL flyers (99x210mm) are an affordable option that works great for restaurants and retail businesses.

Minimum order requirements

Print shops have different policies on minimum orders. Some let you start with just 25 copies, though larger quantities usually mean lower per-unit costs.

VAT can affect your final costs too. Some flyers don’t need VAT if they meet these criteria:

  • Single sheets no bigger than A4 size
  • Printed on flexible paper
  • Made for individual reading rather than display
  • Ordered in quantities of 50 copies or more

Knowing these simple cost factors helps you make smart choices about your flyer printing project. Many printers now offer next-day delivery, so you can balance speed and budget when planning your print run.

Need A Print lets you order as many or as few as you need to control costs on your flyer printing.

Unexpected Fees That Impact Your Budget

Hidden charges in flyer printing quotes can catch you off guard. Here’s a clear look at these concealed costs that will help you plan your budget better.

Design revision charges

Making several revisions one at a time rather than grouping them costs more in amendment fees. You can save time and money by sending all your changes together.

Rush order premiums

Fast turnaround times cost more. Some providers charge up to 50% more for urgent next-day delivery although at Need A Print we charge much less. Planning ahead helps you avoid these rush fees. Larger quantity orders might come in two separate shipments.

Quality Choices That Affect Price

Paper weight and finish play a crucial role in your flyer’s visual appeal and final cost. These quality choices will help you make smart decisions about your print project.

Paper weight implications

Paper weight, measured in GSM (grams per square meter), determines how durable and professional your flyer feels. Thicker paper means a higher GSM:

  • 60-90 GSM: Good for simple documents
  • 120-170 GSM: Standard flyer weight
  • 200-300 GSM: Premium business materials

Paper that’s 170 GSM or higher needs creasing, which adds to your costs. Heavier papers also make shipping more expensive due to their weight.

Finish options and costs

Your choice of print finish affects both looks and price. Here’s what you get with each option:

Gloss Finish

  • Makes surfaces shine
  • Makes bold colours and images pop
  • Works best with detailed designs
  • Absorbs more ink

Silk Finish

  • Gives a subtle sheen
  • Strikes a good balance between pop and readability
  • Business flyers often use this finish
  • Looks professional

Uncoated/Matte Finish

  • Has a natural, non-reflective surface
  • Works well with text-heavy designs
  • You can write on it easily
  • Feels slightly rough to touch

Premium finishing options improve visual appeal but cost more:

  1. Foiling: Adds metallic finish to text or logos, creating a striking effect
  2. Die-cutting: Cuts unique shapes into flyers
  3. UV coating: Makes flyers more durable and shiny
  4. Soft touch lamination: Creates a velvety texture

The right paper quality balances durability, looks, and budget. Higher GSM papers handle better and last longer, but you need to think over how they affect your printing and shipping costs.

How to Avoid Common Price Traps

You can save money on flyer printing costs with smart planning. The right timing and quantity help you avoid extra expenses while getting quality prints.

Planning ahead for better rates

You’ll save more money when you:

  • Place orders a few days ahead
  • Combine multiple print jobs to a single order
  • Work with one supplier for preferred pricing

Get quotes from multiple printers before deciding. The cheapest option isn’t always your best bet – look at quality, reliability, and hidden fees too.

Conclusion

Flyer printing costs go way beyond the simple price per unit. My industry experience shows how paper choices, hidden fees and quality decisions substantially affect the final bill.

Smart planning makes all the difference. You’ll save up to 20% on costs by ordering two weeks ahead. Premium paper and fancy finishes enhance visual appeal, but they aren’t always essential to create effective marketing materials.

Success comes from striking the right balance between quality and cost. Your needs should determine the paper weights you choose. Bundle your print jobs together and schedule orders during off-peak seasons. The fine print about revision charges, rush fees and delivery costs needs careful review before you place orders.

This knowledge about hidden costs will help you make better printing decisions without unwanted surprises. Note that the cheapest quote rarely offers the best value. Look for a reliable printer who delivers quality results at fair prices.

The Skills And Qualities You Need To Look For In a Business Coach

The Skills And Qualities You Need To Look For In A Business Coach

Are you an entrepreneur? Are you looking for a little advice and guidance on your path to success?

If so, you should ask your local council or university about masterclasses and mentor sessions. These sessions are both interesting and informative and will generally turn out to be quite insightful.

To ensure you get the best out of these sessions, its best to do a little research first, because the speakers may either a) talk about something you’re not interested in, or b) be a complete waste of your time.

So, once you’ve got a list of names (upcoming events in your area), you should do a little background research.

These are the kinds of things you should be looking for:

Experience

The number one thing to look for is their resume. What is it they have accomplished? What is it you want to accomplish and does their experience reflect that? If he or she hasn’t ‘walked the walk’, then there’s not much point in attending.

You want them to have paid their dues so they can speak to you about real-life experiences. Ideally they will have failed and succeeded during their career.

This is important because their insight will help you avoid making costly mistakes and increase your chance of success.

Attitude

Having a great attitude comes with time and experience. The right coach will have been through it all, and they will have come out the other side knowing a sense of humor goes a long way in business.

They can see the bigger picture and the finer details, they understand it’s all a numbers game and they don’t get too upset. The ideal coach is also patient, persistent and determined.

Willing To Share

A great coach will be willing to share all their experiences with you – both good and bad. If you get the feeling that they are holding back, that’s not a good sign. You will learn more from someone who is being transparent.

Expertise

Does the coach give lectures about a variety of subjects? If that’s the case, then you should exercise a little caution, because it’s impossible to be everything to everyone, and nor is it desirable.

If they’re out there just to earn a quick buck, then they are getting more out of it than you are, and that shouldn’t be the case.

Accessibility

You must be able to have access to your coach – via email or other means. A good coach will be willing to customize a program especially for you, because they know once size doesn’t fit all.

Test how much they care about your problems and concerns by specifically asking them how much time they can offer you, and what their schedule and availability is like.

Note: This isn’t about hounding them, it’s about being able to liaise on an infrequent basis when you may need them.

Connections

Who do they know and how can those other people help you?

A great entrepreneur is a great networker, so they know that if they’re going to get to where they want to be, they will need a list of contacts as long as their arm!

We all know the saying; ‘it’s not what you know, it’s who you know’.

Expectations

Ask your coach what they expect from you. (because this works both ways remember) 😉

A good coach will keep you accountable and set you tasks to achieve by the next time they see you. If you keep up your side of the bargain, they are more likely to keep in touch and guide you through some of the tougher stages – up to the point they think you’re ready to fly solo!

Everything You Need To Know About The New Nintendo Switch

Lunch times in the workplace tend to be a little boring don’t they!  Well what if you could remedy that with a little fun?

Did you know that Nintendo’s newest console, The Switch, is about to come out? What’s more, it’s both portable and dock-able, so whether you’re in the canteen or meeting room you can pretty much play it anywhere.

That’s right, the device can connect to a TV and it also comes with a screen of its own!

Watch: The Nintendo Switch

The main console controller, which is known as the Joy-Con, has a left and right controllers which slot on and off both sides of a main controller –  allowing for both single and multiple player functions.

Known before its announcement as the NX, it’s one of the weirdest and most interesting pieces of major gaming hardware we’ve seen for a while.

Nintendo’s goal with the Switch was to fill all gaming niches, i.e. single player sessions, mobile sessions, party gaming, playing with a friend and e-sports, and its ticked every box!

Here’s some additional highlights;

  • In some situations, you can prop it up with a kickstand and use one half of the controller in each hand.
  • If you like, you can put the Switch back into its living room console box, but use a more traditional controller instead.
  • With friends, you can prop up the Switch with its kickstand and turn each half of the controller into a simple gamepad. In this case there would be four players in total, playing against each other on two separate Switches.
  • Nintendo promises that you can play the same games whether the Switch is mobile or docked, and the device looks beefier than your average Nintendo handheld
  • The Joy Con’s is an analog stick which has four face buttons on each. They can either be used separately, slotted onto the side of the main Switch body, or secured to a Joy-Con Grip accessory.
  • The Switch uses DS-like GameCards They’ve been described as “cartridges” before, but they’re essentially the kind of little cards that players of portable Nintendo games will be familiar with. They pop right into the side of the tablet.
  • 48 software companies have pledged support for the Nintendo Switch. They include game development companies like EA, Bethesda, Capcom, Activision, and Ubisoft, as well as middleware and game engine companies like Unity and Havok.
  • So far, we’ve seen 6 compatible games via the trailer. These are; The Legend of Zelda, Mario Kart, a new Super Mario game, the paint-based team shooter Splatoon, open-world fantasy game The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, and an unspecified NBA game.
  • It will be available in March.
  • There’s no price as of yet, but keep your eyes peeled because more news is expected shortly!

So get rid of that Wii, it’s time to prepare yourself for a whole new generation of gaming! The opportunities with this new console are endless, meaning the office parties are going to be absolutely in sane.

You could even create a month on month league table and award the winners for finishing first. Its sure to keep them all happy, on their toes and as de-stressed as they can possibly be.
